About the museum
The Parco Sculture del Chianti, at Pievasciata in the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga, is a permanent outdoor exhibition of contemporary installations and sculptures set in a wood of oaks and holm oaks, a little north of Siena. Since 2004 artists from all continents have created works designed for the place, which engage with the natural landscape and with human intervention.
The park's map shows about thirty numbered works, dated between 2000 and 2024. Among the best-known points of the route are the bridge by Johannes Pfeiffer of 2000, an iron structure 19 metres long over a small ravine, and a group of petrified logs from Borneo, around 20 million years old. In 2014 the park was listed by National Geographic among the ten most beautiful parks in the world.
In 2009 an amphitheatre was inaugurated in a natural hollow at the entrance, where from June to August concerts of classical, jazz, opera, tango, choral and folk music are held. Painting and drawing workshops and other events are also offered, while the Pievasciata B.A.C. project brings contemporary art installations into the nearby village as well.
