About the museum
Brolio Castle, whose first stones date back to the early Middle Ages, has belonged to the Ricasoli family since 1141, the year of a documented land exchange. Over the centuries it was attacked and damaged many times, from the Aragonese and Spanish assaults of the 15th century to the conflicts of the 17th century and the bombing of the Second World War, and was rebuilt just as often. Its present appearance combines medieval bastions, Romanesque and neo-Gothic elements and 19th-century alterations, linked above all to Bettino Ricasoli, who was also a key figure in establishing modern Chianti.
The castle is surrounded by an Italian garden with the family chapel. The museum, the Collezione Ricasoli, is housed in the cassero; it is laid out over several rooms and is known in particular for its armoury. The visit includes the castle, the gardens and the collection, and is organised with advance online booking.
The complex is the centre of an estate of about 1,200 hectares, the largest in Chianti Classico, which includes vineyards and olive groves.
