About the museum

The gallery was founded in 1762, when Monsignor Giacomo Zambeccari bought eight 16th-century panels for the Accademia Clementina, which used them as models for its students. After the end of papal rule, in 1796, the Bolognese Senate brought together in a single collection almost a thousand paintings from suppressed churches and convents.

In 1803 the collection was transferred to the former Jesuit novitiate of Sant’Ignazio, in the Borgo della Paglia, where it still has its seat today, alongside the Accademia di Belle Arti. The gallery has been open to the public since 1875, and in 1882 it became independent of the Accademia. The display was radically renewed in 1997.

The exhibition route follows Emilian painting from the 13th to the 18th century: from the Bolognese Gothic of the 13th century to the Renaissance and Mannerism, up to the great period of the Carracci, Guido Reni and the masters of the 17th and 18th centuries. The ticket also allows a visit, within three months, to the detached seat of Palazzo Pepoli Campogrande, currently closed to the public.
