About the museum
The Collezione di Fisica dell'Università di Bologna was founded in 1907 with the establishment of the Institute of Physics, promoted by Augusto Righi. From the late 1970s, on the initiative of Professor Giorgio Dragoni, it was expanded with instruments from city institutions, private collections and other departments.
The objects are displayed in the cases of the Department's historic seat in via Irnerio. The collection includes instruments of mechanics, optics, electromagnetism, thermology and atomic physics from the 19th and 20th centuries, among them microscopes, optical benches, balances, barometers and electrostatic machines. There are also devices for nuclear and subnuclear physics, medical physics and astrophysics.
A collection of 18th-century instruments belonging to the university is displayed instead at the Museo di Palazzo Poggi. The collection is part of the Sistema Museale di Ateneo (university museum system).
