About the museum

The theatre was built between 1767 and 1769 to a design by Antonio Galli Bibiena, at the wish of Count Carlo Ottavio di Colloredo, rector of the Accademia dei Timidi. It was intended above all for scientific assemblies, but it also hosted plays and concerts.

The hall has a bell-shaped plan and several tiers of wooden boxes, the interiors of which were painted by Bibiena himself; the neoclassical façade is the work of Giuseppe Piermarini. The theatre was inaugurated on 3 December 1769, and in January 1770 a concert by the young Mozart was held there.

Today it can hold up to 338 people and is used for conferences, concerts and small performances. The building, in Via Accademia, also houses the seat of the Accademia Nazionale Virgiliana di Scienze, Lettere e Arti.
