About the museum

The museum was founded by the Support Fund of the 1991 Barricade Participants, which on 24 May 2001 decided to establish it; it opened its doors to visitors on 21 August 2001 with three exhibition rooms. Its aim is to identify, preserve and promote testimonies about the January and August 1991 events in Latvia, which were the culmination of the restoration of statehood and the National Awakening, as well as to preserve the memory of the barricade victims and to promote patriotic education among young people.

The museum is in the heart of Old Riga, on Krāmu Street. The entrance of the building is decorated with a stone portal from the first half of the 18th century. During the January 1991 events, barricade participants were served hot tea in this building, where they could warm up and rest. Since 1997 the building has housed the Society of 1991 Barricade Participants.

A new exhibition opened in 2006 and received an annual award from the Ministry of Culture; in early 2014 the basic exhibition was expanded from three rooms to six. The exhibition includes a model of the barricade layout, objects used on the barricades – thermos flasks, walkie-talkies, posters, video cameras and gas masks – selected photographs, OMON equipment and memorial items of those who fell, as well as video and audio recordings. The museum also has a travelling exhibition, the muzeobuss (museum bus).
