Marijos ir Jurgio Šlapelių namas-muziejus

Opening hours

About the museum

The family of Marija and Jurgis Šlapelis moved to the house at Pilies g. 40 in 1926. The Šlapeliai were prominent figures: their bookshop, opened in Vilnius in 1906, was one of the first to sell Lithuanian-language press; it operated for almost 40 years and set up the first Lithuanian-language lending library. The house was built on 15th–17th-century Gothic cellars, remodelled in the Baroque style in the 18th century, and at the beginning of the 19th century acquired features of classicism – an open gallery was set up in the inner courtyard.

After Jurgis Šlapelis's death part of the family left abroad, while Marija Šlapelienė remained to live in two rooms of the nationalised house until her death in 1977. After the restoration of independence, the daughter Gražutė Šlapelytė-Sirutienė regained her parents' house and gave it to the City of Vilnius, on condition that the Marijos ir Jurgio Šlapelių namas-muziejus be set up in it.

The core of the museum consists of family belongings preserved by Marija Šlapelienė and donated by her daughter and granddaughter, as well as books, documents and iconographic material. The collections hold more than 25 thousand exhibits: books, dictionaries, furniture, personal items, photographs, letters and works of art.
