About the museum
The Benedictine Abbey of Echternach was founded in 698 by Saint Willibrord and dissolved in 1797. The surviving monastic buildings, today’s Abbey Palace, date from 1727 and stand next to the Basilica of St. Willibrord. Since 1987, part of the vaulted basement has housed a museum, run by a non-profit association.
In the Middle Ages, the Echternach scriptorium produced famous illuminated manuscripts. The museum displays facsimiles of them, including the Golden Gospel Book (Codex Aureus Epternacensis) from around 1040, whose original has been held at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg since 1955.
Other topics include a Roman villa, the life and veneration of Saint Willibrord, and archaeological finds from the region.
