About the museum

When Lake Echternach was being built in 1975, the remains of one of the largest Roman villas north of the Alps came to light. Excavations took place in 1975 and 1976, and the results were published in 1981 in the standard work “Ausgrabungen in Echternach”. According to the museum, the complex was first built in 70 AD and was in use from the 1st to the 5th century. It was the epitome of Roman luxury: walls clad in marble, mosaic floors, thermal baths and even underfloor heating.

Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved walls and the large water basin in the greenery by the lake. In the visitor center, scenes from the daily life of the villa’s residents are re-enacted, from getting dressed and bathing to everyday meals; detailed building models show how the villa developed over time. A film also gives an impression of Roman culture.

The site includes a Roman kitchen garden with medicinal and spice plants, vegetables, herbs, a grapevine pergola and fruit trees. It shows which plants the Celts already grew and which the Romans introduced, from dill and asparagus to figs and peaches. The site is looked after by the Musée national d’archéologie, d’histoire et d’art (MNAHA).
