About the museum

Members of the Amicale Schëfflenger Kolonien association have for years been collecting tools, objects and documents to keep the memory of steelworkers’ work alive. Until early 2015, the collection was stored in garages with no public access. Since April 2015, it has been housed in a building on the former ARBED site in Esch-Schifflange, whose rooms are made available by Agora, the developer of the new neighborhood.

The main hall of about 110 square meters features authentic machines and work equipment, along with personnel papers, work gear, protective clothing, machine parts and historical photographs. One area is devoted to the general strike of 1942. A second building houses a reconstructed director’s office, an infirmary and mechanical and electronic workshops with their original equipment.

The Metzeschmelz steelworks operated for around 130 years and at its peak employed some 2,600 workers on about 60 hectares. Many association members are former steelworkers and can speak from their own experience. In the long term, the association hopes to move into the historic industrial building “Pompelhaus” in the future Esch-Schifflange residential district.
