About the museum

The Tramsmusée is located next to the offices of the city bus service (Service Autobus) on Rue de Bouillon in the Hollerich district. It tells the story of public transport in the City of Luxembourg: from 1875 to 1908, a horse-drawn tram ran on a network of about 3 kilometers; electric tram service began in August 1908, and on September 5, 1964, buses replaced the last electric trams.

The vehicles on display were collected at the beginning of the 1960s, when there were plans to replace the tram network with buses. For the city’s millennium (1963) and the last run of an electric tram (1964), the workshops of the Service Autobus built highly accurate 1:8 scale models of the trams; further models of trams and buses were added later. The collection also includes uniforms, tickets, ticket punches, maps and plans, as well as several thousand documents on the city’s mobility history.

Today the museum displays two working electric trams, two tram motors, a full-size replica of a horse-drawn tram, two buses, and a Ford vehicle used for overhead line maintenance. With the help of exhibition guides, visitors can watch the motors in action, and explanatory plans provide the technical specifications of the vehicles.
