About the museum
The museum goes back to the Gambrinus Brotherhood, founded in 1986 to preserve Luxembourg's brewing heritage and to gather rare objects related to beer brewing. After a long search for a permanent home, Wiltz was chosen in 1999; the collection moved into the former stables of Wiltz Castle, where the tavern “Jhang Primus” was first set up.
In a second phase, a permanent exhibition on six millennia of beer history opened in 2001. A comprehensive renovation in 2010 introduced an interactive museum concept. Together with the town and the Simon brewery, a microbrewery was also set up, where brewing seminars take place.
The exhibition unfolds across five rooms, from the ingredients through history and brewing techniques to leather production. It traces the arc from the Sumerians via the Benedictine monasteries of Clervaux and Echternach to today's home brewers, and shows the development of Luxembourg's brewing industry. The museum is run by the Syndicat d'Initiative et de Tourisme Wiltz (local tourist office) together with the Gambrinus Brotherhood.
