About the museum
The Fortress Builders Interpretation Centre in Valletta, run by Heritage Malta and also known as the Fortifications Interpretation Centre, explains the history and significance of Malta’s military architecture, from prehistory to the British period. Malta has been called an island fortress: forts, citadels, towers, batteries, entrenchments, bunkers and pillboxes dominate its landscape and testify to intense military activity. The investment in fortifications grew especially from 1530, when the Knights of St John turned the islands into a frontline bastion, and from 1800, when Britain made Malta its naval base.
The centre tells this story through large-scale models, graphic panels and interactive media kiosks. It stresses that fortifications were perhaps the only weapons of war meant to protect life rather than destroy it, and it presents military architecture as the art of defence and a combination of architecture, engineering and art.
The exhibition is in a large 16th-century warehouse. A tour takes about 45 minutes, and guided tours are available on request. From Tuesday 15 September the centre has been closed to visitors until further notice.
