About the museum
The catacombs at Rabat served as a burial ground in Punic, Roman and Byzantine times. Heritage Malta describes them as the earliest and largest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta. The main complex covers an area of more than 2,000 square metres.
The main halls have pillars that resemble Doric columns and circular tables set on low platforms. Around the 13th century a part of the site was reused as a Christian shrine.
