About the museum
The Ateliermuseum Jac. Maris is the former studio and home of the sculptor Jac. Maris (1900–1996), a grandson of the Hague School painter Jacob Maris. The Blokhuis was built in 1913 on behalf of Staatsbosbeheer as an exhibition pavilion for the agricultural exhibition in The Hague. In 1926 Maris rented the wooden house and lived and worked there until 1994; thanks to the light from the glass roof it was ideally suited as a studio. In 1940 he bought the house from the municipality of Heumen and converted it in 1941 using monastery bricks and roof tiles.
To keep his works together, Maris founded the Stichting Jac. Marismuseum in 1994. After his death in 1996 and that of his wife in 2000, the foundation became the owner of the house and collection; in 2000 the Blokhuis became a museum. Maris created sculptures in wood, ceramics, artificial stone and natural stone, including many religious works for churches in Nijmegen and the surrounding area, as well as animal figures, female figures and late abstract works.
Today the museum shows sculptures and paintings in the studio, in the sculpture garden and in the side rooms, including a war cabinet and a library. In 2026 the museum celebrates 100 years of Maris in Heumen with a Maris Year. The studio and garden are also used for events, meetings and weddings.
