About the museum

The muZIEum in Nijmegen is an interactive museum where visitors experience what it is like to be blind or visually impaired. It started in 2005. In 2010 it ran into financial difficulties and went bankrupt, but the city of Nijmegen funded a restart in the summer of 2010. At the end of August 2012 it reopened in the basement and foyer of the municipal theatre, and in 2015 it reached record numbers with 37,500 guests and its 100,000th visitor.

On 1 September 2017 the museum moved into its own building on the Ziekerstraat in the city centre, the former Tilderspand. Today it comprises three experiences: the expedition in the dark, in which you experience everyday life or a holiday without sight with a blind or visually impaired guide; the outdoor experience Expeditie ribbelroute, in which you walk through Nijmegen with augmented-reality glasses and a white cane; and the photo exhibition Unseen, created together with Canon, which makes pictures tangible and audible.

Central is the idea of creating work: more than fifty blind and visually impaired guides are part of the team of about 75 employees and volunteers in total. The museum receives no structural subsidy and is financed mainly through admission revenue.
