About the museum
The Hague is known today as the city of peace and justice, but it was heavily destroyed in the Second World War because the city on the North Sea was strategically important and lay close to both London and Germany. The numerous bunkers that the occupiers built in the dunes of Scheveningen and Kijkduin survived the war and stand in striking contrast to the city's international courts.
The Stichting Atlantikwall Museum Den Haag was founded on 1 January 2005. It aims to raise awareness of the Atlantic Wall installations in the city area, to contribute to peace education and to keep restored bunkers accessible as a lasting memorial. Since 2009 it has been recognised as a charitable institution (ANBI).
The main site is Widerstandsnest 318 on Badweg in Scheveningen. From the Type 608 command bunker the occupying forces commanded the Scheveningen strongpoint group; it is largely furnished as it was, together with original objects of German, British, Canadian and American troops. A Type 622 crew bunker serves as an experience bunker with film screenings, and a toilet bunker can also be seen. The second site in Widerstandsnest 67 HL in Kijkduin comprises around 130 metres of tunnel with six bunkers, including parts of the former Luftwaffe aircraft reporting post; in 2015 the volunteers rebuilt a demolished section of tunnel and reconstructed a trench with a Tobruk pit. The museum belongs to the Atlantikwall Zuid-Holland network and cooperates with the Museum Rotterdam ’40–’45 NU.
