About the museum

Muzee Scheveningen came into being in 2006, when the Museum Scheveningen and the Zeemuseum were merged; the foundation was established on 8 September 2006. It aims to promote knowledge of the origins of Scheveningen, its culture, its relationship with the sea, marine biology and everyday life in the community. Since 2013 Muzee has also been a “Cultuuranker” for the district, that is, a place for cultural activities by and for residents.

The museum is housed in a school building from 1877 on the Neptunusstraat. In the collection, everyday life in the former fishing village and later seaside resort is the common thread: fishing, bathing culture, old crafts, everyday objects and paintings. The marine biology collection consists mainly of shells from all the world’s oceans and is among the largest shell collections in the Netherlands; more than 150,000 objects are registered. In the museum café De Halve Vleet, the interior of a genuine Scheveningen pub has been preserved.

Besides the exhibitions, concerts, theatre, readings and guided tours take place. Attendants and storytellers are partly former fishermen, who also give tours on certain days. The building is considered outdated and is to be renovated and made more accessible: according to current plans construction will begin on 1 April 2027, and the museum is expected to close to visitors from February 2027 for about a year.
