About the museum
CODA is Apeldoorn's cultural centre: under one roof it brings together a museum, the central library and the city archive. The museum goes back to the Van Reekum Galerij, which opened in 1965 in a new cultural centre on Soerenseweg. The Apeldoorn business family Van Reekum had endowed a fund for this purpose, with which the city was able to build and run a venue for the visual arts.
In 1976 the municipality decided to upgrade the gallery and gave it an annual acquisitions budget. Under the director Jerven Ober (1942–2009) a collection of its own took shape; in 1980 the institution received the title "museum". Besides drawings and prints, Ober also bought jewellery art and contemporary photography, thereby laying the foundation for today's jewellery holdings.
Around the year 2000 the old location was no longer adequate. The Van Reekum Museum, the Historisch Museum Apeldoorn and the municipal archive were made independent and merged, and the public library later joined them. The result is the building designed by Herman Hertzberger on Vosselmanstraat.
The collection comprises modern and contemporary art, including paintings, sculptures, prints and photography. Since 2004 the focus has been on contemporary jewellery design and on artworks made of paper and cardboard; there are also historical holdings and the wooden ADO toys by Ko Verzuu. In 2021 Ober's estate gave the museum more than 200 pieces of jewellery. The holdings are shown in changing selections.
