About the museum
Museum EICAS – the abbreviation stands for European Institute for Contemporary Art and Science – has been making art accessible since the 1960s. Its starting point is the thinking of the Dutch Nul movement and the international ZERO group, in which the idea of a work matters more than its outward form. Plans for such a museum in Deventer became known from 2018.
From 1 August 2020, as a forerunner, EICAS showed exhibitions on about 500 square metres in the Polstraat. The museum moved into its actual home in the former Hegius Gymnasium on the Nieuwe Markt, a municipal monument from 1954 (architect Wim Knuttel), which was converted in 2022 by Hans van Heeswijk Architecten and given a glass roof. It was officially opened in March 2023; almost all staff work on a voluntary basis. The Museumkaart has been valid since 2 July 2024.
Alongside works by Nul and ZERO artists such as Armando, Jan Henderikse, herman de vries and Henk Peeters, the museum shows changing exhibitions of contemporary, non-figurative art. It links art with science through workshops, lectures and publications, and also runs an education studio, a library, an archive and a museum shop.
