About the museum

There have been mills in Nes since the early 17th century. The current mill was built in 1880 after its predecessor burned down – hence the name, a reference to the phoenix, the bird reborn from its ashes. The ground-level smock mill was restored in 1951 and 1981 and has belonged to the municipality of Ameland since 1980.

In 2018 and 2019 the mill underwent a thorough renovation, during which the body and cap were rethatched. In a second phase, an underground visitor center was built on the east side beneath the Mullesduun dune, housing an oil press. Since early 2022, oil has been pressed here again alongside the grinding of rye; the mill is considered the only combined grain and oil mill in Friesland.

De Phenix is operated by the Vereniging Vrienden Amelander Korenmolens as part of the Stichting Amelander Musea. When there is enough wind, volunteer millers demonstrate oil pressing and explain how the mill works. The rapeseed oil is sold as cooking oil, while the linseed oil is used as a technical oil; the oil is also made into Ameland soap.
