Koren- en Mosterdmolen De Verwachting
Gallery windmill in Hollum where flour is ground and Ameland mustard is made – with a mill shop, mustard tasting, and a small exhibition.
About the museum
From 1840 to 1949, a grain mill called De Verwachting stood on the Molenweg in Hollum; it was torn down after World War II. Decades later, a new octagonal gallery mill was built in its place. According to the museum, it was rebuilt in 1988. The mill is owned by the municipality of Ameland and in 2024 became the island's first listed municipal monument.
The mill is run by the Vereniging Vrienden Amelander Korenmolens within the Stichting Amelander Musea. Volunteer millers certified by the Molengilde (millers' guild) set the machinery in motion on fixed milling days. In addition to flour, the mill produces Ameland mustard in more than a dozen varieties; the ingredients come from the Wadden region, and the products carry the "Amelands Produkt" label.
When there is enough wind, visitors can watch flour being ground or mustard being made up close and have millers and mustard makers explain their craft. A small exhibition covers the history of Hollum's mills, and the shop sells mustard, flour, pancake mixes, and regional products.
