About the museum
The Duikmuseum in Lemmer is dedicated to the history of diving technology. It explicitly does not see itself as a virtual museum but as a place where diving enthusiasts can actually view the collection – but only by prior arrangement.
The collection is organised as a timeline, running from the sponge and pearl divers of antiquity via Leonardo da Vinci's designs and the first diving bells around 1500 to the copper helmets of the 19th century. In the 20th century the focus is mainly on standard suits with helmets by Siebe Gorman, hand-operated air pumps and diver telephones, along with breathing apparatus of the kind later common in military and recreational diving.
The museum gladly accepts diving equipment or special finds from private individuals that would otherwise sit in an attic, and expands the collection in this way. The museum does not publish details about its founding or operator.
