About the museum
The museum is housed in a 1850 farmhouse in Sondel in Gaasterland, which the Eppinga family lived in for three generations. Willem Eppinga, who was a farmer himself, collected objects from rural everyday life over many decades. This passion gave rise to the collection, which he opened to the public in June 2011 in the renovated house.
It shows country life from the beginning of the 20th century to the present: old farming and craft tools, hay, milk and other wagons, furnished living rooms, church objects from the village, and a Frisian carriage. There are also personal items of the founder, such as his childhood bicycle and his school desk.
In 2013, Willem Eppinga was appointed ambassador of the Nationallandschap Zuidwest Fryslân for his commitment. Today the museum is run voluntarily by family members. It is open on selected days in the summer season; groups can visit outside this period by registration.
