About the museum
The Historisch Museum Hedel has been located in the former municipal building of Hedel since 1982. The building dates from 1883, was badly damaged in the Second World War and, after repairs, served as the town hall until 1968. In 1990 an extension for the agricultural department was added. The collection and building belong to the Stichting Hedels Historie, which works entirely on an unpaid basis; since June 2014 the museum has been a "Geregistreerd Museum".
On the first floor, objects can be seen ranging from the first settlers of old Hatalle (Hedilla) to the finds that came to light in the early 1980s when the remains of Hedel Castle were uncovered. The castle played a major role in the Eighty Years' War and had its own minting right: 34 used and unused coin dies are on display in the Muntkamer. French troops destroyed the castle in 1794, and the remains were later demolished; today the foundations behind the Catholic church have been partly rebuilt.
On the ground floor, an extensive photo collection shows streets, houses and people of the last hundred years. The agricultural department presents equipment and tools that were used in Hedel, including the "Hedels wagentje" from 1913. There is also a room for changing exhibitions, in which artists from Hedel and the Bommelerwaard can also exhibit for a small fee.
