About the museum
The museum is dedicated to the carnival in Oeteldonk, as 's-Hertogenbosch is called during carnival season, and to carnival in other cities and countries. It is located on the Binnendieze on the site of the former gatehouse of the medieval convent of the Zusters van Orthen. The order moved into the convent in 1424; the gatehouse collapsed shortly after the Second World War through lack of upkeep and was replaced by a simpler new building, which now houses the museum.
The permanent collection includes masks, clothing, promotional material, weapons and badges, as well as other objects from the history of carnival and of Oeteldonk. A youth corner shows the play around the Oeteldonk youth carnival. The library contains hundreds of books on carnival customs from around the world, plus documentation, music, DVDs and videos, as well as more than 600 prints (copper, steel and wood engravings) from the 16th to 20th centuries with carnival scenes; it can be used for research by arrangement. Further pieces are kept in a storage depot, whose holdings the museum lists on its own website.
Visitors are guided through the building by volunteer hosts. The operator's goal is to become the centre of carnival documentation in the Netherlands. Because the building has many stairs, the museum offers a take-away slide presentation for people who cannot climb.
