About the museum
The LAM (Lisser Art Museum) opened in early 2019 on the Keukenhof estate, opposite the famous flower park. The building and collection were financed by the VandenBroek Foundation, founded by Jan van den Broek, former director of the Dirk supermarket chain. The museum is privately run and receives no government funding.
All the works revolve around everyday things such as eating, drinking and shopping; the museum describes its collection as the largest food art collection in the world. On display are sculptures, installations, paintings, sound art and digital art.
The building, designed by the architect Arie Korbee, seems to float among the treetops; a public footpath runs right through it and offers a view of the art as if through a shop window. Instead of attendants there are "Kijkcoaches" (looking coaches) in every hall, who give tips on looking closely and listen to visitors. To avoid crowding, only tickets with a fixed start time are available, and the price follows the principle "You decide who pays": a regular ticket sponsors the art, while a sponsored ticket is free.
