About the museum

The museum is housed in a former village forge on the Kerkstraat in Strijen. The base of the forge probably dates back to the 16th century, the attached residence to the 19th century. Over the centuries the building was always used as a forge. After a thorough renovation, the local heritage association "Het Land van Strijen" opened the buildings as a museum on May 18, 2001.

The reason for founding the association was a spectacular glass find made in 1982 during the extension of the former municipal hall on the Kerkstraat. It showed residents that they lived in an old place with a rich history. The find now has a permanent place in the exhibition in the attic.

In the basement, a period room and a period kitchen furnished in the condition of the 1940s and 1950s are set up, along with a bed alcove, a medieval cellar vault and a small library with furniture from the former town hall of Strijen. A cellar area serves changing exhibitions. In the attic the association displays tools from various trades and crafts, and the Stiftung Archeologie Hoeksche Waard presents finds from the Iron Age to the 18th century. The equipment includes an electrically powered forge hammer; on every second Saturday of the month the blacksmith works at the fire.
