About the museum
The museum tells how flax and sugar beets were grown and processed in West Brabant over the centuries. On October 4, 2002, the mayor of the municipality of Moerdijk opened the house in Klundert. It belongs to the Stichting Nationaal Vlasserij-Suikermuseum and is run by volunteers. It is housed in a restored farm estate with a large reception room and two exhibition halls, the "Vlasserij" (flax processing) and the "Suiker" (sugar).
In the flax hall, machines and tools show how the plant was turned into linen fibers: ribbling, retting, breaking, scutching and hackling. The area was once significant for this: around 1960 some 500 farms cultivated about 2,000 hectares of flax; by 2000 only just over 80 hectares remained. Former workers of the flax factories demonstrate the work steps to groups, using historic equipment and restored machines.
The sugar section begins with the origin of sugar cane and sugar beet, shown on a three-part world map and a huge hand-embroidered tapestry depicting harvest and processing. There are also models of sugar factories from the 1950s and 1960s at a scale of 1:32, information panels on production, and display cases of old sugar products in their original packaging.
Individual visitors receive a free audio guide, and groups can book programs with tours, demonstrations and food and drink arrangements.
