About the museum

The Liemers Museum is devoted to the history of the Liemers, a region between the Rhine, the IJssel and the Old IJssel that is shaped by borders and by life with water. It belongs to the cultural organization Kunstwerk!, formed in 2016 as the umbrella for theater, music school, library and museum in the region.

Since 2022 the museum has been housed in the former factory hall of Turmac in Zevenaar. Turmac was founded in 1920 as a cigarette factory. Today the building, as the Turmac Cultuurfabriek, also houses a library, municipal administration, a film house and a Grand Café. Works from the famous Peter Stuyvesant art collection, which originated in this factory, are also on view there.

The permanent exhibition follows a long timeline from the ground floor to the upper floor, supplemented by an audio tour, videos and animations. Themes include archaeology with Roman finds from the Limes, rivers and water, nature with a herbarium and taxidermy specimens, religion and marksmen's guilds (Schützenwesen), the brick industry, and well-known companies such as Turmac and Gimborn/Pelikan. A separate section covers the Second World War, when in the last year of the war the Liemers lay at the front.
