Mosterdmuseum Doesburg

Museum in a still-operating mustard factory in Doesburg: old mustard mills and equipment show how mustard and vinegar are traditionally made.

Opening hoursAdmission €3 Wheelchair accessible

About the museum

In the Hanseatic town of Doesburg on the IJssel, within the old town fortifications, stands the Doesburgsche Mosterd- en Azijnfabriek, which by its own account goes back to a founding in 1457; the factory itself is dated to 1806 in the press. The building is a municipal monument. It is considered the smallest mustard factory in the Netherlands, and mustard and vinegar are still made here today in the traditional way.

In 1974 a museum was attached to the factory. There you can see old mustard mills with the associated factory equipment from various vanished mustard factories. Visitors walk through the old mustard works and experience how "boeren" (farmer's) mustard is still made and processed in the old way; the products can be tasted and bought in the shop.

For decades Rokus and Marian van Blokland ran the factory and museum. When they wanted to hand over because of their age, it was important to them that both stayed together as one in Doesburg; Timon Houwers became the new owner. The museum is intended for all age groups, including with a pushchair or wheelchair, and can be visited on your own. For groups of ten or more people a demonstration is available on request, and schools can book a guided tour.
