About the museum
Museum IJsselstein, or MIJ for short, is a small museum near Utrecht on the Walkade. It shows a collection of objects connected with IJsselstein in a contemporary presentation, complemented by temporary exhibitions, mostly of contemporary art on current themes. Its predecessor was the Oudheidkamer, set up in the Kasteeltoren after the Second World War.
The permanent exhibition arranges the highlights not chronologically but by emotional themes such as nostalgia, pride, freedom, connectedness, hope, resistance, limitation and curiosity. Iron Age finds, medieval shame stones (Schandsteine) and works by contemporary artists enter into dialogue. Among the pieces is Zoë Tim Hollander's installation "0ooOO (Low Hanging Fruit)", a reference to local fruit and willow cultivation.
The museum also includes the Kasteeltoren IJsselstein (the Loyertoren), the only surviving part of IJsselstein Castle, which was demolished in 1888. The staircase tower, built around 1530 for Floris van Egmond, serves as a satellite site for exhibitions. It is open during museum hours with tower guards and can only be reached by stairs.
