About the museum

Museum Warsenhoeck is housed in the farmhouse at Geinoord 11 in Park Oudegein, on a spot where a dam lay in the Doorslag in the 12th and 13th centuries. Goods were transhipped and tolls collected there, and the medieval small town of Geyn grew up around it, disappearing from the map again in the 14th century. The present farmhouse dates from the 17th century; archaeological investigations found traces of the earlier toll house and an old well.

Since August 1979, part of the building has been used as a children's farm (Kinderboerderij). After extensive restoration at the end of the 1980s, the Historische Kring Nieuwegein opened the museum in the restored farmhouse on 28 April 1990. On around 280 square metres over three floors, it shows the history of Jutphaas and Vreeswijk, villages that were independent until 1971.

The archaeological part of the permanent exhibition is particularly notable, with finds from the Middle Palaeolithic from Jutphaas. In addition there are everyday objects, old prints, photographs and an audiovisual corner; on the upper floor, thematic exhibitions and art exhibitions alternate. The museum is currently working on a new presentation of the collection.
