About the museum
The museum's beginnings lie in Steyl, where the German priest Arnold Janssen founded the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) in 1875, during the Kulturkampf. In 1879 the congregation sent its first missionaries to China, and the first objects came from there to Steyl. As the missionaries went to further countries, the ethnological and natural history collections continued to grow; Brother Berchmans, a butterfly specialist who had returned from Brazil, looked after them. At first they occupied only one room in the mission house.
After the purchase of specimens from the Franciscan museum in Watersleyde, space was no longer sufficient. The foundation stone for the present museum building was laid in 1929, it was finished in 1931, and it was officially inaugurated on 1 February 1931.
A special feature is the arrangement, which has hardly changed since the death of Brother Berchmans in 1934; it makes the building a museum within a museum. Two touchscreens and QR codes at the display cases provide additional information on missionary work and monastery life in Steyl. The museum is run by the Stichting Missiemuseum Steyl.
