About the museum
The Molen van Sloten stands at the Akersluis in the former village of Sloten, which is more than a thousand years old and now part of Amsterdam. The octagonal, reed-thatched polder mill made of oak was rebuilt in 1991 on a new stone foundation. It draws on a mill from 1847 from eastern Amsterdam, but received new parts such as the cap, sails and an Archimedean screw.
Like its predecessors, the mill drains polders in western Amsterdam, together with the electric pumping station Akergemaal on the nearby ring canal of the Haarlemmermeer. It is one of the few mills in the Netherlands that still work daily and receive visitors. In hourly tours, millers explain how wind, screw and water level work together.
The site also includes a small cooperage museum showing the old craft of barrel making. Around the mill you can explore the village of Sloten: with a hand pump that still works, the smallest police station in the Netherlands and a banning post from 1794. A village walk leads to these stops; the house also rents out rooms for meetings and weddings.
