About the museum
The Van Eesteren Museum was founded in 2010 by local residents who wanted to push back against the poor image of Amsterdam Nieuw-West. They started with an open-air museum and showed on their walks how green, spacious and well thought out the neighborhood really is. From guided walks and a small information point in an old school, the museum grew, via a museum apartment, into what it is today.
It is named after the urban planner Cornelis van Eesteren, who played a major role in shaping the General Extension Plan (AUP) of 1935 with its guiding idea of light, air and space. The museum apartment on Freek Oxstraat in Slotermeer opened in 2012. It is furnished as a 1952 apartment in the spirit of the Goed Wonen foundation, with furniture and household items donated by neighbors.
Since 2017 the museum has had a new pavilion by the architects Korteknie Stuhlmacher on the Sloterplas, on exactly the spot Van Eesteren had already earmarked for a pavilion in 1939. The program includes exhibitions, walks, talks and workshops, carried out by more than 100 volunteers.
