About the museum

Museum Arnemuiden aims to preserve and exhibit local history and to tell the stories of former times. It began in an authentic 19th-century house on the Spoorstraat. Later the collection was divided, supplemented with municipal antiquities and moved into two buildings on the Langstraat: the former town hall, ’t Stadthuys, and an old house opposite, ’t Uusje van Eine. The museum is run by the Stichting Oudheidkundig Museum Arnemuiden, a purely volunteer organisation.

The town hall deals with Arnemuiden's heyday in the 15th and 16th centuries, when merchant ships from all over Europe lay in the roadstead and salt works refined raw salt into pure salt. The roadstead silted up, the large ships moved away, and fishing became the main source of income for centuries. When the Sloe was dammed in 1872, the village lost its access to the sea; the fleet is now based in Vlissingen. Other topics include the old council chamber with paintings, the Arnemuidse streekdracht, which is regarded as a further development of the Nieuwlandse dracht, and Maurits van Vollenhoven.

’t Uusje van Eine shows a 19th-century house where time has stood still: the grandmother's box bed, living room, kitchen and attic with costumes, photographs and furniture from around 1900. Archaeological finds are on display in the 16th-century cellar.
