About the museum
Museum Veere consists of two historic buildings: the Scottish Houses (“Het Lammeken” and “De Struijs”) on the Kaai and the late Gothic town hall on the market square. The names recall the trade with Scotland: from 1541 Veere was the staple port for Scottish goods, above all wool. After the Scots left, the town fell into decline; at the end of the 19th century private individuals saved the two houses from demolition.
The foundation of the museum was laid by Jonkheer Victor de Stuers, the “Bouwjonker”, who donated the Lammeken to the state in 1906. De Struijs had been acquired in 1896 by the English diamond dealer and art collector Albert Ochs; in 1947 his daughter Alma Oakes bequeathed it, along with her collections, to the state, on the condition that it be turned into a museum together with the Lammeken. The museum was officially opened on 9 June 1950. Since 2000 the Delta Cultureel foundation has managed the house.
Among its treasures are the seven Stadhuisbeelden of 1517/1518, a rare, almost completely preserved group of figures of the lords and ladies of Veere; a Zeeuws Sterkabinet made of precious woods; the gilded cup of Maximilian of Burgundy of 1551 in the town hall; and paintings by the “Veeristen” artists’ colony, which flourished in Veere between about 1900 and 1940. The town hall includes a tower with a carillon of 47 bells; in the 3D adventure “1813” visitors can virtually roam through Veere in Napoleonic times.
