Ernesto Neto

About the museum

The foundation was laid by collector Frans Jacob Otto Boijmans, who bequeathed his paintings to the city of Rotterdam; in 1849 the museum opened in the Schielandshuis. A fire in 1864 destroyed a considerable part of the holdings. Since then the collection has grown mainly through donations – around 1,700 private collectors have contributed to date.

In 1935 the museum moved into the brick building by city architect Ad van der Steur on what is now the Museumpark; its tower became a landmark. With the acquisition of large parts of the collection of shipowner Daniël George van Beuningen, the museum received its double name in 1958. Extensions followed in 1972 (Bodon wing) and 2003 (Robbrecht en Daem).

Because the listed building was in urgent need of renovation, it closed in 2019. Since November 2021, the Depot designed by MVRDV has stood next to it – the world's first publicly accessible art storage facility. The entire collection is stored here, arranged by climate zone, and visitors can look into storage rooms and restoration studios. The main building is being renovated to plans by Mecanoo; reopening has been announced for 2030.

The collection comprises more than 150,000 objects, including some 89,000 drawings and prints. Its focuses include Early Netherlandish painting with works by Bosch and Bruegel, masters such as Rembrandt and Rubens, Impressionism, one of Europe's largest Surrealism collections, and design and everyday objects spanning eight centuries.
