About the museum
Museum De Opkamer grew out of a private passion for collecting. The owner, Ton van Lieshout, joined the folk dance group “De Knupduukskes” from Vorden and, on its trips to different countries, got to know many traditional costumes. He began collecting them and brought back all kinds of objects from his travels.
Over the years the collection grew far beyond costumes: old toys, dollhouses, games and puzzles were added. Because the living house soon had little room left, the exhibition moved into the basement under the house, which had once been a print shop, a bicycle shed, a playroom and, for a time, a small disco. Today the display covers more than 200 square meters, partly in the family home and partly in the garden.
On view are regional costumes and traditional dress from several Dutch regions, including mourning, wedding, christening and children's clothing, an Achterhoek kitchen with a box bed and a Staphorst parlor. The toys, made of wood, tin and celluloid, range from a working model railway from around 1930 to dolls, dollhouses and a self-built, illuminated miniature fair. In the garden, display cases show old trades such as laundry, hat-making, blacksmithing, shoemaking, carpentry, clog-making, tobacco trade and baking.
