About the museum
Museum MORE was founded in 2015 as a private project; the name stands for "MOdern REalisme". The first location opened on June 2, 2015 in Gorssel, in the former town hall of 1914. Architect Hans van Heeswijk converted it and added a pavilion-like new building with seven exhibition rooms. Less than a year later, it welcomed its hundred-thousandth visitor.
The museum shows figurative art from the 20th century to today, with a focus on Dutch realism in a broad international context. Its own collection ranges from Jan Mankes and Charley Toorop to Carel Willink and on to contemporary positions such as Ruud van Empel. In addition, there are several changing exhibitions each year with art from the Netherlands and abroad.
The museum now comprises three locations: Gorssel, MORE Ruurlo in Kasteel Ruurlo since 2017, and MORE Twickel in Delden since September 2026. The event rooms in Gorssel, including the Council Chamber, are decorated with murals by the artist Tanja Ritterbex. MORE members have unlimited access to all three venues.
