About the museum
Museum Jan Boon commemorates Jan Boon Junior (1758–1847), a merchant, benefactor, and the last shipowner of De Rijp. His Mennonite family was among the village's most important shipowning and merchant families and took part in whaling and herring fishing. They also ran a rope works, a tannery, and a sailmaking business.
His estate included, besides business assets, letters, a family Bible, household goods, and a large collection of nautical charts by well-known Dutch cartographers. After Boon's death, the Maatschappij tot Bevordering van Nijverheid in De Rijp managed his legacy. The documents are now held in the Alkmaar Regional Archive, and the charts are in the climate-controlled room of the In ’t Houten Huis museum. Jan Boon is also part of the permanent exhibition in De Rijp's old town hall.
The museum itself is in the Walhuis from 1725, a former shed behind the Maatschappij building by the water. After more than a century of disuse, it was restored in 1983 and fitted out for socio-cultural use. The entrance is on the Rechtestraat, between house numbers 146 and 148.
