About the museum
Jan Heesters (1893–1982) was born in Schijndel, initially trained as a technical draughtsman, and from 1917 studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Influenced by Vincent van Gogh, he developed his own realistic style that captures the mood of the landscape and rural Brabant. He spent most of his adult life in the listed house at Pompstraat 17.
Heesters bequeathed the house, furnishings and works to the municipality, with the wish that a museum be established there. As a result, his paintings, drawings and etchings have been preserved, as have furniture, photographs, documents and religious objects that vividly illustrate the artist's daily life. In total the holdings comprise around 5,000 objects, including antique furniture and household items.
Since 2009, around 150 works by the artist Theodorus van Oorschot have supplemented the collection as a permanent loan. The museum alternately shows exhibitions on Heesters and his contemporaries, and also sculptures in the garden. The house belongs to the municipality's Kunstcollectie Meierijstad and works together with Erfgoed Brabant.
