About the museum
Spelebos is a national toy museum in Museumpark Best, in the middle of the Sonse Heide forest area. It was realized in 2012, but on the municipality's orders it had to close after just two weeks because permits and fire-safety requirements were missing; after adjustments it was then able to open.
The museum shows toys and games from the past in a way that brings them to life through light, sound and movement. Many pieces are displayed in dioramas, and visitors trigger effects at the push of a button. The collection includes teddy bears, dolls and dolls' houses, Barbie, cowboys and Indians, Fisher-Price, Playmobil, robots, model railways, Meccano, wooden toys by Nooitgedagt, carousels, figures from the Fabeltjeskrant and arcade machines. There are also classic board games to play, such as Dame (draughts), Gänsespiel (game of the goose), Mens erger je niet (ludo), Sjoelbak and table football. Children follow a rally through the museum to find their way around.
The grounds also include a Dino Forest with life-size dinosaurs and climbing equipment, and a mini golf course with twelve holes in two themed worlds. Together with the EMV, a model railway museum of around 500 m² ("Spoor op vleugels") is being built. The brasserie 't Boshuys is right next door, and the Museum Bevrijdende Vleugels is also on the site.
