Museum Janning

Museum of church art in the former Catholic rectory of Nieuw-Schoonebeek, with paintings by Pastor Janning and a wood-panel wall from eastern Germany.

Opening hoursAdmission €7.50

About the museum

The museum goes back to Hein Janning, who was born in Nieuw-Schoonebeek in 1914, ordained as a priest in 1940 and died in Workum in 1980. Alongside his pastoral work, he was known as a painter and collected church art, partly acquiring it with the proceeds from his own paintings. After his death, the Museum Kerkelijke Kunst opened in 1985 in the rectory of the Werenfridus Church in Workum.

When the house in Workum was given up, the collection moved. On July 18, 2020, Museum Janning opened in the former Catholic rectory of Nieuw-Schoonebeek in Drenthe, the birthplace of its namesake. It is run by a foundation.

On display are the pastor's paintings, gold and silver work, relics, a tile collection and other art objects in the Janning Room, as well as the glass-plate photo collection of teacher Schreur from around 1900. The upper floor shows the worldwide art collection of Joz. van Aarle. The highlight is the wall paneling of the Janning Chapel, over two meters high and eighteen meters long, from a church in the former GDR, with carved reproductions of paintings by Raphael and the Van Eyck brothers. Visits are guided, and coffee is included.
