About the museum

Museum Spakenburg tells the story of the municipality of Bunschoten and of the former Zuiderzee fishing village of Spakenburg. Its origins lie in the 1960s, when the municipality acquired a model of a botter boat and laid the foundation of the collection with it. In 1984 it bought an old harbor building for the museum, known as 't Vurhuus.

In 1992 the village's last small fish smokehouse was added; it now stands on the museum grounds as a listed building. After a comprehensive renovation, the museum reopened in spring 1997 and was expanded in 2008. Today it is spread across several buildings along the historic Watersteeg on the Oude Schans.

On around 1,500 square meters, the route leads past fishermen's houses, a farm, a shop, a classroom and the smokehouse; in addition there is a temporary exhibition. Industry and football, including the rivalry between the clubs Spakenburg and IJsselmeervogels, also have their place. The collection includes regional costume (streekdracht), paintings, furniture, porcelain and ceramics, and fishing and farming tools. The museum is listed in the Museumregister (national museum register) and has ANBI status (Dutch charity status).
