About the museum
The Kunsthal KAdE (the abbreviation stands for "Kunst aan de Eem") opened in Amersfoort on 1 May 2009. At first it used rooms in the building of the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed on Smallepad. In May 2014 it moved into the newly built Eemhuis on Eemplein, designed by Neutelings Riedijk Architects of Rotterdam, which brings together the Eemland Library, the Eemland Archive and "Scholen in de Kunst" under one roof.
The house deliberately has no collection of its own. This allows it to take up freely changing themes from modern and contemporary art, architecture, design and present-day visual culture, and also to show country presentations that look at the essence of a culture. The programme is complemented by guided tours, workshops, lectures and family activities; in the KAdEStudio, visitors can experiment and create for themselves.
The Kunsthal lies just outside the old town walls, behind the medieval Koppelpoort on the Eem. Alongside the exhibition area there is a café and a shop with art books, design and postcards, both accessible without an admission ticket. The operator is the Stichting Amersfoort in C, which also includes Museum Flehite, the Mondriaanhuis, the architecture centre FASadE and the Elleboogkerk. With the Elleboogkerk, the Kunsthal occasionally uses a second venue in the old town.
