Rietveld Schröderhuis

Iconic De Stijl house by Gerrit Rietveld and Truus Schröder (1924), a UNESCO World Heritage Site; visits only with a timed ticket.

Opening hoursAdmission from €19 Café

About the museum

The house on Prins Hendriklaan was built in 1924 as a joint project of Truus Schröder-Schrader, widowed at a young age, and furniture designer Gerrit Rietveld. Schröder wanted a home for herself and her three children that broke with bourgeois conventions; for Rietveld it was his first commission for a complete building.

The result is considered a key work of the De Stijl movement: freely placed planes and lines, primary colors alongside white, gray and black, and an open upper floor that can be divided into separate rooms in the evening with sliding walls. A corner window that opens completely dissolves the corner of the building. Originally the house stood on the edge of town with a view of the polder landscape; an expressway drastically changed the surroundings in the 1960s.

Truus Schröder lived here from 1925 until her death in 1985. Rietveld had a studio on the first (ground) floor and moved in for good after his wife's death in 1957; he died in 1964. As early as 1970, Schröder set up a foundation to secure the house permanently.

After a thorough restoration, the Centraal Museum took over its care; the house has been open to visitors since 1987 and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The museum also manages the Rietveld Schröder Archive with thousands of drawings, photos and letters.
