Schelpenmuseum Paal 14
Small shell museum on Schiermonnikoog with more than 1,500 self-collected shell species, beach finds and driftwood from shipwrecks.
Have only individual sections read aloud
About the museum
The museum grew out of the De Boer family's passion for collecting. All the shells and beach finds on display were collected by Thijs and Annelies de Boer and their family themselves; nothing was bought, given or exchanged. More than 1,500 shell species can now be seen.
The exhibition introduces the world of molluscs, which after insects form the largest group of animals on Earth. In eight display cases, the structure of molluscs, snail eggs, opercula, pearls, fossil shells, amber and peat wood, among other things, are explained. Several display cases show shells, crabs, starfish and other animals from the beach of Schiermonnikoog, others show snails and shells from around the world.
Wreck wood from the island's beach hangs on the walls, and flotsam lies outside. At the reception there are beach souvenirs, beach guides and search cards, as well as a reading corner; you can have your own beach finds identified here. A shell excursion can be booked for groups, and there is a teaching booklet for schools.
