About the museum
The museum is located in the twin village of Paesens-Moddergat directly on the Wadden Sea, in the far north of Friesland. It preserves the memory of former coastal fishing and village life. A central theme is the disaster of the night of March 5 to 6, 1883: a severe spring storm struck the fishing fleet, and 83 fishermen from Paesens-Moddergat lost their lives.
The museum consists of several buildings. The oldest, 't Fiskershúske, dates from 1794 and shows a fisherman's household around 1850. "Klaske's Húske" is furnished in the style of the early 20th century. In "de Aek", the permanent exhibition "Vissers van Wad en Gat" (Fishermen of the Wadden and the Gat) features ship models and the history of lifesaving, while "de Logger" is used for temporary exhibitions. There is also a small library and an extensive photo collection.
The operator is the Stichting Musea Noardeast Fryslân. A renovation is planned for the coming years: the shrimp drying factory of 1924 is to be expanded into a visitor center with a parking lot, the five fishermen's houses are to be refurnished and a farmstead developed as a further location; no completion date has been set.
